The annual blue hearts verge survey was undertaken in June this year by Dave Nichols from Nature Spot.
A total of 36 flora species were recorded this time, including 11 species which are typical of good quality meadow grassland. Yellow Rattle seeds were added in 2022 and these have established well, clearly helping to reduce the vigour of neaby grasses and creating a shorter and more open sward.
We are very pleased that the verge seems to be developing well and details of what flora and wildlife was found this year can be seen on this link: https://www.naturespot.org.uk/WildlifeGuide/Desford-Hunts-Lane-Verge
Desford in Bloom, alongside Desford Parish Council, hope to sow some more seeds this autumn to encourage growth and improve the diversity.
We also hope to create some more permanent signage ahead of next summer, hopefully with a link to a web page where information on the verge can be continually updated.
